La Merced Chapel
Huancayo comes from "Huanca" a word in Quechua, which was the language spoken by natives in Peru, this word means "stone".

Its first citizens were the "Huancas", that were well-known because their cruelty and warlike spirit. Therefore, Pachacutec in his trial of conquering their land sent his brother Capac Yupanqui, who did not use arms but words to try to convince them to belong by themselves to the big empire that was being formed by his brother. At this point we must remember that Pachacutec was the last Inca, and thanks him Peru grew in power and extension.

The first city in Mantaro Valley to be conquered by Francisco Pizarro was Jauja, this was an strategic point to occupy some towns that were near it, this was the case of Huancayo city, which started to be occupied in 1533.

In 1577, the viceroy Toledo and Jerónimo de Silva, arrived Jauja from Lima city. Jerónimo de Silva stayed in Jauja some time with the purpose of taking a census of native people, while the viceroy Toledo continued his trip to the south of Peru. It was in this way to Huamanga that the viceroy passed through a beautiful valley and ordered Silva to found a city there. Silva verify the qualities of the place to reside in, and then founded Huancayo the 1st day of June in 1572, giving it the rank of a town. He maybe chose this date because of the traditional catholic celebration of the Most Holy Trio, this ceremony ocurred where now is located Huamanmarca square.

In 1813 was the Constitution of Cadiz proclamation.

On November 20th in 1820; was proclaimed Peru's independence in Huancayo, historically this was the first city in Peru in which deliverance yell was heard.

During Torre Tagle government, in 1822, March 19th, Huancayo got the title of "Ciudad Incontrastable" ("Insurmountable City") which means that it was not possible to be conquered.

In 1839, the militar Agustín Gamarra established the Constituent Republic Congress, giving the first Political Constitution of Peru in November 10th in the same year. This constitution had 19 titles, and 193 articles, this constitution was in force for 16 years until 1856; and the congressmen worked in the actual considered Historical National Monument - La Merced Chapel.

Marshal Don Ramón Castilla, declared the abolition of slavery in Huancayo this action took place on December 3rd, in 1854.

On November 16th in 1864, was created Huancayo the province.

During Sánchez Cerro government, on January 15th in 1931 Huancayo was recognized as the capital of Junin this title was before for Cerro de Pasco.
